Andreu Balius
Born in Barcelona where he studied Sociology and Graphic Design,Balius is the creator of the
typographic project `Garcia fonts & co.' (1993) and founder of the studio
`Typerware' (1996-2001). Since 2001 he is professor in the faculty of Social Sciences and
Communication at the University of PompeuFabra in Barcelona. In 2003 Balius created
`TypeRepublic', dedicated to typographic design and typeface production. He currently alternates
studio workwith teaching in several design schools in Spain, as well as being a member and
founder of the collective `Grrr'. He is the author of the book Type at Work. The use of typography
in editorial design, published and translated in several languages.The works of Balius are the
subject of many articles in specialized journals. Balius is frequently invited to present his projects
at international congresses such as Berlin, Lisbon, Barcellona and Helsinki.
Patrick Thomas
Born in Liverpool, UK in 1965, Thomas studied at the Saint Martins School of Art and at the Royal
College of Art in London. In 1991 he moved to Barcelona where for many years he worked
freelance. In 1997 he co-founded the multidisciplinary studio `laVista'. Hedivides his time
between the studio, international press work and production of silkscreens. In 2006 he exhibited
at the Victoria & Albert Museum of London, at the International Centre of Photography and School
of Visual Arts in New York, at the Centro de la Imagen in Mexico, at the Centre of Contemporary
Culture of Barcellona and at the Ginza Graphic Gallery of Tokyo. Other recent exhibitions of his
workhave been held in Los Angeles, Pennsylvania, London, Barcellona, Madrid, Amsterdam,
Milan and Istanbul. In 2005 Thomas published Black & white, a collection of his most recent
graphic projects, chosen by Angus Hyland.
Alessandro Segalini
Italian by origin, Segalini has been living in Turkey since 2005 wherehe teaches design, graphics
and topography in the Departmentof graphics anddesign of the University of Bilkent,
Izmir. Graduate in design from the Polytechnic Institute of Milan, Segalini completed his studies in
visual communications with a second degree in Helsinki (2002) and a PhD in industrial design at
the Polytechnic Institute of Milan (2004).
A self-taught calligrapher, he developed an ability and understanding of font editing and
topographic design. Invited to present his ideas at conferences, Segalini is a `pre-press'
technician in several studios, agencies, institutions and publishing houses. Having studied
philosophy and history he as been published in various italian journals such `Graphicus' and
`Progetto grafico'.
Tarek Atrissi
Having studied design and graphics at the American University of Beirut,Tareki Atrissi completed
his graduate studies with a Masters Degree in Interactive Multimedia at the University of Utrecht
in The Netherlands and a Masters Degree in Applied Art and Design at the School of Visual Arts in
New York. His work has been exhibited at the Guggenheim in New York and is part of the
permanent collection of the Affiche Museum in The Netherlands. His projects have been published
in the major design journals and he has been awarded various prizes including the `Type Directors
Club's', `Adobe Design Achievement' (2002), `Aquent Design' (2003) and the `IBDAA99'. Creator of
anonline platform for Arab typography, Atrissi is frequently invited to hold seminars and lectures
around the world. He has been professor at the University of Dubai, at the Virginia Commonwealth,
in Qatar and he taught in the Masters of Art, Design and Technology (2005) with the support of
UNESCO.
Atrissi published Visual Dialogues: Letters from Arabia which he co-authored in 2007. Currently
he is directing a multidisciplinary design studio in the Netherlands concentrating on international
clients. His current project include corporate fonts for newspaper, television stations,
multinational companies and sporting events.
Giovanni Baule
Graduate in architecture at the Polytechnic of Milan, Giovanni Baule is professor of industrial
design in the Faculty in Design, where he coordinates the area dedicated to communication.
Involved in the methodology of visual communications and graphic design, he is the director of
the magazine `Linea grafica'.
